Spassky & Fischer - an introduction
This historic chess set which Jaques have replicated of the famous pieces used for Spassy and Fischer's Icelandic World Championsip in Reykjavík in 1972 which many still refer to the "match of the century". Each set is numbered and supplied with extra Queens. King height of 89 mm (3.5"). The bases of the chessmen are leather and embossed with a facsimile of Staunton's signature, the year of original design registration and "Spassy and Fischer 1972".

The contest took place at the height of the Cold War and consequently was seen as symbolic of the political confrontation between the two superpowers. Fischer won and Spassky returned home to the U.S.S.R. in disgrace. Spassky continued to play, winning several championships including the 1973 Soviet championship.
We were commissioned to supply the chessboards and boxes for these vaulted chess pieces back in '72 for the Championship and have in our fiftieth anniversary year decided to re-introduce the set and present it in a number of unique ways, as follows:

# Bspk-57/AT/S&F-STCH For those chess addicts who are "on the move" we have created a chessboard attaché case which incorporates an inlaid leather Chessboard as the lid. Keeping it's precious cargo from unwelcome visitors are two solid brass nickel or gold plated combination locks, while a solid leather reinforced hand stitched carrying handle allows for comfortable carrying.
